Preparing for a Session
There are several things you can do to make your experience here more productive. Here are a few tips…
Before you arrive:
- Think about what you would like to focus on in your writing and questions you have about your work.
- Print out a hard copy of your paper, or make sure the digital copy is easy to read and edit.
- If you have an assignment sheet or any description of what you’re supposed to write, please bring it.
- Also bring any notes or outlines you have made, especially if you are just starting a project.
- If you are working with a group, we encourage you to come in together.
When you arrive:
- The consultant will introduce themselves and ask you for some background on your project and any specific concerns you have.
- If you are working on a written piece, the consultant will ask if you are more comfortable reading your work aloud or hearing it read. Listening to your work can give you a new perspective on it, and can be very helpful for determining the tone and pace of your writing as well as simple typos, but if you are uncomfortable with this just let us know.
- If you are working on an oral presentation, you can rehearse it in a private room or discuss written material, like your outline or slides.
- You and the tutor will go through the paper in small chunks; if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
- Keep in mind that each session is only 30 minutes long. The consultant may not be able to read your entire paper, though you should still be able to address your main concerns.
